Box Score 2 TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound Loggers were unable to overcome a late surge from the Whitworth Pirates, falling 2-0 in what may have been the quickest game of the season.
Despite a solid defensive effort and a strong pitching performance from
Alison Madia, the Loggers were held scoreless through seven innings. The team struggled at the plate, managing only three hits. Key performances included catcher
Alyssa Waldo, who went 1-for-3, and a solid fielding effort from shortstop
Aislind Dail who made multiple plays to record outs.
The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when the Pirates broke through with two runs. The Loggers could not respond, leaving five runners on base. Madia pitched the entire game for Puget Sound, giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out four and walking three, only throwing 61 pitches.
Puget Sound's offense was stymied by Whitworth's pitching who tossed a complete game shutout. She allowed three hits, walked three, and struck out no batters, but her defense played behind her, making key plays when needed.
In game two, a dramatic finish saw UPS score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off Whitworth, 3–2.
Down 2–1 entering their final at-bat, the Loggers strung together a rally that started with
Savannah Manley drawing a leadoff walk. Though pinch-runner
Brenna Flannery was caught stealing, Puget Sound didn't flinch. With two outs and the tying run still off base,
Aislind Dail sparked the offense with a single to shortstop.
Kylie Tanimura followed with a base hit to center, and
Alyssa Waldo loaded the bases with an infield single. That set the stage for
Alyssa Figueroa, who delivered a clutch two-run double to the gap in left center field, scoring Dail and Tanimura for the win.
Figueroa went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Waldo and Tanimura also notched multi-hit performances.
Claire Besancon added a first-inning RBI single, helping the Loggers jump out to an early 1–0 lead.
Whitworth answered in the fifth, when Camryn Sage drove in two runs on a single, but the Pirates left six runners on base and couldn't solve Puget Sound pitcher
Nyomi Estrada when it mattered most. Estrada went the distance for the Loggers, striking out eight and scattering eight hits to earn the win.
Whitworth's Riley McIntyre also tossed a complete game, allowing 11 hits and three runs while striking out two.
The Loggers next face Willamette at home for a four-game series on Friday, April 18th.
