All-Sports Celebration Highlights Year's Success

TACOMA, Wash. — Nearly 500 student-athletes, coaches, and local Logger legends gathered at the University of Puget Sound Memorial Fieldhouse last night for the 37th Annual All-Sports Celebration. The evening celebrated the athletic, academic and community service achievements of the student-athletes for the 2024-25 academic year. After an introduction by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, President Isiaah Crawford gave a welcome and Interim Athletic Director Jeff Thomas gave remarks - specifically noting his gratitude and appreciation for the dedication of our scholar-athletes.

Puget Sound recognized more than 150 of its scholar athletes, from individual awards to team awards, such as the Ron Thomas Spirit Award, given to Women's Soccer for their support of the other teams on campus.

The evening included the department's annual special awards, which are listed below.
 

Alice Bond Award

The Alice Bond Award is presented to the Most Outstanding Female Student-Athlete. Alice Bond was the pioneer for women's sports at Puget Sound as the Director and Supervisor for women's sports from 1947 to 1976.  

Track athlete Kyrstin Wilson is a national winner in the 100m and 200m, a school record holder, and a four-time Dean's List Scholar.
 

Ben Cheney Award

The Ben Cheney Award is presented to the Most Outstanding Male Student-Athlete. It is named for Lumber company owner Ben Cheney, an outstanding citizen and a great athletic booster not only for the University of Puget Sound, but the entire City of Tacoma.  

Second-year track athlete and first-time National Champion Alex Rhodes is this year's recipient of the Ben Cheney Award. He is the University's first-ever indoor national champion, a conference champion, and the school record holder in five events.

  

Richard Ulrich Award

The Richard Ulrich Award is named for Puget Sound's former athletic director and Hall of Fame member Dick Ulrich.  The award is presented to student-athletes who show outstanding leadership skills and tireless commitment to their teams and Logger Athletics.   

This year's Richard Ulrich Leadership Award men's sport winner is Will Pohland, who is graduating with a 3.9 GPA, is a two-year team captain, SAAC President, and a relentless defensive leader for Logger Basketball.

The Richard Ulrich Leadership Award women's sport winner is the SAAC Vice President, a communications honor student, and a standout leader for Logger Soccer - Zoe Fowler.

 

Robin Hamilton Award

The Robin Hamilton Award was established to honor an individual who served the university for more than 30 years as both a record-setting coach, an administrator, and an important mentor to student-athletes, the Robin Hamilton Award was established in 2018. The award is presented to those who embody Robin's core tenet of the importance of strong attitude and effort leading to team achievement.   

This year's Robin Hamilton Award men's sport winner is Drew Kamihara. Drew  is a Scholar-Athlete, a West Region Gold Glove winner, and a four-year leader for Logger Baseball.

This year's Robin Hamilton Award women's sport winner is a two-time First Team All-Conference defender, a two-year team captain, and the heart of Logger Soccer's back line, Sienna Kloss.

Harry Werbisky Award

The Harry Werbisky Award is given to well-rounded men's sport student-athlete who not only excels in athletics and academics, but also shows the determination to continue to improve in all areas of his life. 

This year's Harry Werbisky Award winner is Jason Rowe. Jason is a First Team All-Conference tennis player, a top-three singles competitor in the conference, and a 3.9 GPA student.

 

Roberta Wilson Award

The Roberta Wilson Award is presented to the women's sport student-athlete who displays the excellence in her sport, excellence in her academics, and an unmatched determination to continue to excel in all aspects of her life. She also played a key role in the advancement of women's athletics in the early years after the passage of Title IX. 

This year's Roberta Wilson Award winner is a senior from the women's soccer team. Emma Pack is a double major in Communication Studies and Business, a Summa Cum Laude graduate, and a two-year team captain. 

 

Dill Howell Award

The Dill Howell Award is awarded to the most improved student-athletes on the court, field, or in the water. 

This year's Dill Howell Award men's sport winner is Zach Robman, one of the top closers in the West Region. He has posted six saves so far and cut his ERA from nearly 10 to just 2.5 this season.

Sarah Johnsen is this year's Dill Howell Award women's sport winner. She is a First Team All-Conference right-side hitter, a national leader in blocking, and a four-year scholar-athlete. 


John Heinrick Award

The John Heinrick Award is given to the student-athletes who display the same leadership and inspiration as legendary Logger coach John Heinrick. 

This year's John Heinrick Award men's sport winner is Will Church. Will is a two-year team captain, a vocal leader known for his energy and spirit, and one of the toughest competitors in the conference.

This year's John Heinrick Award women's sport winner is Savannah Manley, a team captain whose leadership, resilience, and positivity helped guide her team through adversity on the softball team.
 

Paul & Helen Perdue Award

The Paul and Helen Perdue Award is given to the student-athletes who embrace the spirit of community service that Paul and Helen displayed through their lives in Tacoma and at the University of Puget Sound. 

This year's Paul and Helen Perdue Community Service Award men's sport winner is a Rotary Club member, a beach cleanup volunteer, and an organizer for SAE fundraising supporting local nonprofits- Will Cabana.

Emily O'Neil is this year's Paul and Helen Perdue Community Service Award women's sport winner. She is a campus leader with "The Team" Engaged Athlete program, a Special Olympics supporter, and a two-time Little Loggers volunteer.

Tim McDonough Award

The Tim McDonough award is presented to student-athletes who provide inspiration and leadership through involvement in the community, campus ministries or social justice. 

This year's Tim McDonough Award Men's sport winner is Hayden Teeter. Hayden is a Puget Sound Young Life leader, an Operations Nightwatch volunteer providing shelter and food, and a Social Call volunteer connecting with senior citizens. 

The Tim McDonough Award women's sport winner is Madeline Johnson, a campus leader in Ministries and Social Justice, a Res-Life Assistant, and a Washington State Civic Leadership Award recipient.

Academic Honors

Male Sport Senior GPA Winners:

4.0 – Josh Cunningham, Men's Swimming (Biochemistry, Studio Art)

4.0 – Lance Mielke, Men's Swimming (Molecular & Cellular Biology)

Female Sport Senior GPA Winner:

3.982 – Kaila Bonawitz, Women's Golf (Business Administration, Communication Studies)
