TACOMA, Wash. -- The Logger baseball team split their doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran University, falling 7–1 in the opener before bouncing back for a 5–2 victory. The Game 2 win marks the Loggers' 23rd victory of the season, setting a new program record for single-season wins and securing a spot in the Northwest Conference playoffs.
Pacific Lutheran took an early lead in the first inning, extending their advantage in the fifth to push the score to 3-0. The Loggers were held to six hits in the series opener, and their lone run came in the bottom of the sixth. Preston Crockett led off with an infield single to third base and advanced to second when Matt Churchill was hit by a pitch. A groundout by Ryan Spero moved both runners into scoring position. Pinch hitter Jim O'Brien then grounded out to second, allowing Crockett to score from third and put the Loggers on the board. Charlie Decker gave Puget Sound a competitive start on the mound, but the Lutes added late runs to pull away, including a three-run top of the eighth.
In the second game, the Loggers responded in a big way. Puget Sound broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Kahiau Teruya scored on a PLU error. Teruya then added an RBI groundout in the fifth, bringing home Makana Murashige to extend the lead to 2–0. Murashige continued his strong play in the seventh, delivering an RBI double to center field that scored Drew Kamihara, pushing the Logger lead to 3–0.
Pacific Lutheran mounted a comeback in the eighth inning, scoring two runs to narrow the gap. However, Aidan Sullivan provided crucial insurance in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer to left field, sealing the 5–2 victory for the Loggers. Harley Eschliman (4–1) earned the win, pitching a solid game to keep the Lutes at bay.
Puget Sound takes on the Lutes again tomorrow in a doubleheader matchup set for 12:00pm at Logger Field.
