Loggers, Pirates Square Off in Elimination Game at NWC Tournament

| By:

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — The Puget Sound baseball team will face Whitworth University in a Northwest Conference (NWC) Tournament elimination game today, with first pitch scheduled for approximately 4:45 p.m. at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

The matchup is a rematch of Thursday's thrilling 11-inning contest, in which the Loggers earned a 7-6 victory in the program's first-ever NWC Tournament appearance. Today, the stakes are even higher; the winner will advance to Saturday's championship game against host and top-seeded Pacific, while the loser's season comes to an end.

Puget Sound (1-1 in the tournament) dropped a 7-2 decision to Pacific earlier this afternoon. Despite racking up nine hits, the Loggers were held to two runs and left five runners on base. Ryan Spero and Drew Kamihara each tallied two hits, and starter Mason Quinlan took the loss after surrendering six runs across five innings.

Whitworth (1-1) rebounded from its Thursday loss with a 7-3 win over Linfield in an elimination game Friday morning. The Pirates scored 3 runs in both the third and fourth inning to break the game open. Pitcher Dylan Huntsman earned the win with six strong innings, and the Whitworth bullpen kept the Wildcats scoreless over the final three frames.

This will be the fifth meeting between Puget Sound and Whitworth this season. The Loggers won two of three regular-season games in Spokane and took the postseason opener in extra innings on Thursday, led by Kamihara's three-hit, two-RBI performance and a clutch sacrifice fly from Cody Hirano in the 11th inning.

Live coverage will be available on the NWC Network and StatBroadcast.
