Men's Basketball Season Wrap-Up: Finishes Strong, Looks to Deep Roster for Future Success

The University of Puget Sound men's basketball team, led by coach Aubrey Shelton, wrapped up its season with a 13-12 overall record, finishing 8-8 in conference play and tied for fifth in the Northwest Conference, just one game shy of a postseason berth.

The Loggers kicked off their season with a big win, overcoming a 29-point deficit — the biggest comeback in school history — to beat Carleton College in Minnesota. They wrapped up the trip with two straight victories. After a challenging 1-5 start in conference play, the team rallied to finish strong, going 7-3 in their final 10 NWC games.

Taj Phillips '25 led the way, earning multiple Conference Player of the Week honors and First Team All-NWC recognition. He set school records for career and single-season assists, scored over 1,200 career points, and ranked in the top 10 nationally for assists per game. His standout game at Willamette included 30 points, eight assists, and eight rebounds.

Several other Loggers made major contributions. Zane Miller '27 earned Player of the Week honors after helping the Loggers sweep Linfield and Pacific. Hugo Rutherfurd '27 scored a career-high 34 points against Pacific and led the team in blocks and shooting percentage. Rutherfurd, the previous season's NWC Freshman of the Year, earned honorable mention all-conference. Liam Ruttledge '25 became a 1,000-point scorer and was the team's third-leading scorer this season.

Looking ahead, the Loggers expect a healthy, deep roster. Dezman Baker '26 returns alongside a strong junior class featuring Miller, Rugherfurd, and Ian Cook '27. First-year standout Beckett Turner '28 is poised to contribute even more, and several players — including Kobe Smith '26, Cameron Wood '27, and Dante Deshautelle '28 — will return from injury. Transfer Trevon Hamilton '28 will join the team to add athleticism, depth, and energy on both ends of the court.

Off the court, the team posted a 3.52 fall GPA — its highest ever — and ranked among the top five programs academically. This August, the Loggers will travel to Greece for exhibition games and team-building opportunities.
