TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers keep a clean sheet once again, shutting out George Fox 3-0 to remain undefeated in Northwest Conference play.
How it Happened
The game got off to a slow start, as in the first five minutes, both teams were maintaining possession. Both keepers made good saves, and the Loggers started to put some pressure on the Bruin back line. A couple of corner kicks led to a couple of shots from
Sydney Boyd and
Zoe Witter in the 13th and 16th minutes but the Loggers couldn't quite convert.Â
Puget Sound's pressing attack led to another corner in the 33rd minute, and
Hayden Goodman put a fantastic ball in play. So good, in fact, that it curled in from the corner and bounced off the post and into the net – 1-0 Loggers. Just seven minutes later, the Loggers struck again. This time,
Ellie Rutkin played a fantastic ball into space, finding
Leila Hausia-Haugen for her third goal of the season. A shot at the buzzer by Hausia-Haugen was saved by the Bruin's keeper, as Puget Sound took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The second half got off to a quick start, as
Zoe Witter scored a fantastic goal. She took the ball from just inside the attacking half, dribbling around defenders and blasting a shot over the keeper from just outside the box. The Loggers took that impressive lead, and didn't look back.
The rest of the game was primarily a sit and possess type of game. Boyd, along with freshman twins
Charlotte Willis and
Avery Willis, all had several good plays down the stretch. The team played well together and showed why they are one of the top teams in the conference.Â
Top Performers
Hausia Haugen netted a goal, along with three shots and three shots on goal. Witter, Boyd, and
Anne Linggi all had two shots on goal apiece, and
Gianna Maldonado finished the day with a clean sheet and four saves.Â
Coach's Thoughts
"Our young team showed today how consistent we can be and how serious we are about conference," said Logger head coach
Stephanie Cox. "I was proud of the focus and attention to detail from Gianna and our backline to earn another shutout as George Fox posed a threat in transition. Huge shoutout to Leila and Witter to score two days in a row and make the most of their chances. We have great leadership from our group on the bench and on the field. Looking forward to our challenge on Wednesday vs PLU."
