Loggers Come Back to Beat Bearcats 3-1

SALEM, Ore. -- Puget Sound bounces back from a midweek loss, taking down Willamette 3-1 to capture their third win in four games.

How it Happened
After a physical first couple of minutes, Willamette got on the board first, scoring in the 13th minute to take an early 1-0 lead. Etiene Polak made an attempt to get back in the match, firing a shot that missed just right in the 18th minute. In the 35th, Ethan Lu fired a ball into the 18-yard box. It glanced off Rhys Foote and into the back of the net, tying the game at one apiece.

Willamette started out on the front foot in the second half. Owen Pschigoda fired a ball that missed left in the 54th minute, and Willamette shot a couple of their own as the second half got underway. Foote struck again in the 68th minute, finding himself in perfect position yet again. This time, Sebastian Telles put a ball out wide for Jackson Smith, who crossed the ball into the box and found Foote for the goal.

Just four minutes later, the Loggers put the cherry on top. In an action that started from a goal kick, the Loggers tore straight through the Bearcats defense. Jackson Smith flicked the ball towards Pschigoda, who took a step around a defender and fired the ball into the back of the net to go up 3-1.

A couple or errant shots by the Bearcats wrapped up the remaining 18 minutes, as the Loggers were able to hold strong. This gives them a 3-1 record in conference play, sitting comfortably in third place just a quarter of the way through the season.

Top Performers
Foote finished with three shots and two goals in just 66 minutes of play. Smith recorded two assists, and Pschigoda earned his first goal of the season.

Coach's Thoughts
"I'm incredibly proud of our effort tonight," said Logger head coach Steve Mohn. "Going down a goal early on the road is a tough spot to be in, but our guys responded with grit and determination. They battled hard to get a goal back before halftime and scored some great goals in the second half. To come away with three points on the road against a good opponent is a testament to their character."

What Happens Next
The Loggers return home to play Linfield on Saturday, October 4th, at 2:45 pm.
