Loggers Drop First Games of the Season to No. 3 Eastern Oregon

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers put up a good fight against the preseason No. 3 NAIA team in the nation, but ended up dropping their games against Eastern Oregon 6-1 and 6-0 to open their season.

How it Happened
Game 1
The Loggers held their own in the first game, keeping the score close all the way until the end. Nyomi Estrada got the bump in the circle for the Loggers, pitching a masterclass against an explosive Mountaineer offense. After giving up an unearned run in the first inning, Estrada escaped a bases-loaded jam to switch the field.

After a pair of scoreless half innings, the Loggers had the next-best chance in the bottom of the second inning. Three Logger walks led to the bases being loaded with two outs, but they couldn't capitalize on the baserunners, keeping the game at 1-0. Estrada went six up and six down in the next two innings, with Kaylee Tanimura getting the Loggers' first hit of the day in the third.

A Mountaineer run in the top of the fifth made it 2-0, but the Loggers weren't done yet. Olivia Boures got the log rolling in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a lead-off single to get on the bases early. Jazzy Allen pinch ran and stole second, and Estrada brought her in with a single to make it 2-1. A final four-run inning by Eastern Oregon sealed the deal, though, as the Loggers dropped game one 6-1.

Game 2
The second game was all Mountaineers as the Loggers struggled to find their footing offensively. Eastern Oregon got off to a hot start, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning. Alison Madia then settled into the game, pitching a shutout inning in the second. Liberty Shake got on base in the second after being walked, advancing on a passed ball to reach second base. The Loggers were unable to capitalize, though, turning the inning over to Eastern.

Two more runs were piled onto the Mountaineers' lead in the top of the third, and a Tanimura single wasn't enough to score any loggers in the bottom of the third. The teams traded solid defensive innings, as the pitching and defense started to pick up. The Mountaineers broke the scoring drought, putting up two runs in the top of the fifth. That ended up being the difference maker, as the Loggers dropped game two 6-0.

What Happens Next
The Loggers are right back in action on February 15th at 10:00 am. Due to the softball field undergoing renovations, the games will be held at Foss High School.
