TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers take down Northwest Conference No. 1 Whitworth in a thriller on Senior Day, winning 69-67 in one of their best performances of the season.
How it Happened
The game got off to a super slow start, as both teams struggled to get shots to drop in the first eight minutes of the game.
Zane Miller got the log rolling, driving to the rim after a
Hugo Rutherfurd block to make it a 6-5 Puget Sound lead.
Ian Cook extended the led to three with a layup of his own, and
Trevon Hamilton hit a three to make it 11-7, Hamilton continued to play well getting to the rim on back-to-back nice finishes.
Miller hit a three to push the lead to six, but a 7-0 Pirate run put Whitworth back on top.
Aaydan Saucedo and Rutherfurd both hit threes to put the Loggers back on top, and back-to-back Hamilton buckets made it 32-26 at the break. The Loggers showed good ball pressure, forcing Whitworth to take tough shots. They held the Pirates to 26 points - one of the lowest scoring first halves for the Pirates all year.
Whitworth climbed back into the game to start the second half, but a three by
Dezman Baker stopped the bleeding. Cook then got to the paint, and after the Pirates tied the game, Saucedo drilled a three to put the Loggers back on top. Their lead was short-lived, though, as the teams scored on five straight possessions.
Hamilton then came alive, going on a shooting spree to keep the Loggers in the game. He drilled back-to-back threes, stole the ball on back-to-back possessions, and got to the basket to score eight straight points for the Loggers. The mometnum swayed Puget Sound's way, as Becket Turner scored a tough and-one to put the Logs up five with six minutes to go.
The Logger lead extended to seven, as a Miller steal led to a quick bucket by Hamilton. The Pirates wouldn't back down, though, pulling within one with under a minute to go. The duo hit the majority of their free throws in the final seconds, keeping the Loggers up two with eight seconds remaining. A huge Rutherfurd block at the buzzer sealed the deal, as Puget Sound upset the Pirates on Senior Day.
