TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers cruise to a 68-45 victory over Whitworth on senior night, completing a 20-win regular season for the fourth time in the last five years.
How it Happened
Ayana Peterson-Henry, the lone senior on the Puget Sound women's basketball team, got the Log rolling with a block to start the game. From there, both teams took a bit to settle in, as the Loggers took just under four minutes to score their first basket. Despite the shots not falling, the Loggers played well on defense, as they tied the game at six apiece thanks to a three by
Carmen Cruz.
Mele Sake hit the final bucket of the quarter, as the Loggers found themselves down 12-9.
The Loggers proceed to go on a 17-0 run to start the second quarter, not allowing a single Pirate bucket until 3:47 left in the half. Cruz started the run with a jumper and a three, as
Natalia Sefair-Lopez also hit a three to get her on the scoresheet. Another deep three by Cruz made it 20-12, and another pair of buckets by
Autumn Hill and Sefair-Lopez concluded the Logger run.
Hailey Quiggle,
Claire Thompson, and
Savannah Pohl all got in on the action, propelling the Loggers to a 33-18 lead at the half.
Hill opened the scoring to start the third, and another Cruz bucket and tough and-one made it a 21-point game. Cruz then hit another jumper and another three, as the Loggers continued to roll in the third. The game slowed down a little bit as the Loggers rotated their entire lineup onto the court. The Pirates score four straight to end the quarter, but the Loggers had already scored more in three quarters than the Pirates did the entire game.
The fourth quarter saw the Loggers on cruise control. Peterson-Henry got a bucket on senior day to start the fourth, and
Paige Oh hit a three as well.
Brianna Forbess got on the scoresheet with a layup with six minutes to go, and another two Cruz threes put the Loggers back up 22 with two minutes remaining. Quiggle hit a three, and Peterson-Henry capped off the night with the final made Logger bucket of the evening. The Loggers take this one, 68-47.
