TACOMA, Wash. - A late comeback attempt by the Puget Sound
Loggers fell just short as the 20th-ranked Whitworth Pirates
defeated host Puget Sound, 3-2, in a Northwest Conference men's
soccer game on Sunday afternoon on East Athletic Field in Tacoma,
Wash.
The Pirates (12-2-2, 8-2-1) took advantage of a slight wind
heading toward the north goal in the 32nd minute when the corner
kick by Cameron Bushey drifted into the upper right corner of the
goal for an early Whitworth lead. The Bucs made it 2-0 in the
39th minute when Dion Coxe fired a shot from about 30 yards out on
the far left that found it's way past Logger keeper Greg Saetrum
(Boise, Idaho/Timberline). The Loggers narrowed the gap going
into halftime when Michael Dooley (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic)
found Ameer Mohit (Orinda, Calif./Miamonte) in the 41st minute and
Mohit scored his first collegiate goal, using one touch to put the
ball in from about five yards out.
The Bucs regained the two-goal lead in the 74th minute when Eddy
Prugh broke away from a Logger defender and beat Saetrum one-on-one
for the 3-1 lead. The Loggers came back to get within a goal
in the 88th minute when Taylor Hyde (Sandy, Utah/Waterford) scored
from about eight yards out but it was too little, too late as the
Bucs escaped Tacoma with the 3-2 win.
Saetrum made two saves on the afternoon off 15 Whitworth
shots. The Pirates' Jeff Srock made three saves on the day,
allowing the two UPS scores. The game was physical with 26
total fouls called and three yellow cards shown in the game.
The Loggers will look to get back in the win column on Saturday
when they travel to Forest Grove, Ore. to take on Pacific.
Game time with the Boxers is set for 2:30 p.m. following the
women's game.
