ORANGE, Calif. - In a match dominated by defense, the Puget
Sound Loggers were on the wrong end of a 1-0 season-opening
match with the Chapman Panthers in a NCAA Division III
men's soccer game on Friday night in Orange, Calif. The game
marked the season-opener for both squads.
In the first period, the Loggers (0-1) worked the ball into the
Chapman (1-0) half of the field, earning two corner kicks to go
with a pair of shots but the Panthers' Cody Mansfield broke the
scoreless draw in the 41st minute on an unassisted goal that got
past Logger keeper Scott Macha (Eugene, Ore./Marist).
The Loggers added three more shots and one more corner in the
second half but the Chapman tandem of Tyler Hadinsky and Matt
Bernhardt was able to keep the ball out of the net.
Junior Alex Lehecka (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) had
the only shot-on-goal for the Loggers in his only attempt of the
night. Macha made a save in the second half, his lone stop of
the contest, as the UPS defense held Chapman to just six shots on
the night, including just two on target.
The Loggers will stay in Southern California for the holiday
weekend, taking on Pomona-Pitzer on Monday afternoon before
returning to Tacoma for the start of classes on Tuesday.
