SPOKANE, Wash. - For the second straight day, the Puget Sound
Loggers found themselves in a scoreless tie and for the second
straight match, the Loggers held off their opponents in the extra
minutes, playing to a 0-0 draw with the 24th-ranked Whitworth
Pirates in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday in
Spokane, Wash.
In the first 90 minutes, the Loggers only had one significant
offensive chance but it could have been the game-winner as senior
Cole Peterson (Great Falls, Mont./C.M. Russell) got his head on a
Logger corner kick in the 36th minute and the ball clanged off the
crossbar.
The Pirates dominated the shots category during regulation,
outshooting the Loggers, 12-1, but freshman keeper Chris McDonald
(Newton, Mass./Noble & Greenough) had an outstanding match for
the second straight day, making five saves in regulation to force
the extra period.
In the extra 20 minutes, the Loggers again had an opportunity
early to collect the win as Alex Lehecka (Burlington,
Wash./Burlington-Edison) fired off a shot just 31 seconds into
extra time but Brian Sherpe got in front of it for Whitworth's only
save of the contest. The Bucs fired off seven shots in
overtime but only one of those was on goal and McDonald made the
save to collect his sixth save of the afternoon.
The Loggers will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when
they return home to play host to Willamette.
