TACOMA, Wash. - The Puget Sound Loggers staged a comeback in the
later stages of the fourth quarter to force overtime but in the
extra period, Pomona-Pitzer put in the winning score as the
Sagehens spoiled the Loggers' season opener, 20-14, in a NCAA
Division III football game on Saturday afternoon on Peyton Field at
Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
The Sagehens (1-0) got on the scoreboard first when they used 16
plays to go 63 yards on their opening drive that was capped off by
a quarterback keeper from Jacob Caron and the PAT was good as
Pomona-Pitzer took the early 7-0 lead. The Loggers answered
back a few drives later when senior quarterback Kavin Williams
(Ocean Shores, Wash./North Beach) ran around the left end and saw
nothing but daylight as he ran 76 yards for the Logger
touchdown. The PAT by David Marcell (Spokane,
Wash./Riverside) sailed wide left as the Loggers got within one
point, 7-6.
After neither defense allowed a point in the second quarter, the
Sagehens stretched their lead with 4:31 remaining in the third
period when Caron found Robert Maki in the endzone for a touchdown
and the Duncan Hussey PAT was good as P-P took a 14-6 lead.
The Loggers tied it up with 5:55 left to go in the game when
freshman Ross Zuhl (Issaquah, Wash.) collected a 38-yard pass from
Williams for a Logger score. The Loggers went for two on the
point after attempt and Williams used his legs to find the endzone
as Puget Sound tied the game up, 14-14.
The Loggers attempted a 38-yard field goal in the closing
seconds but a Pomona-Pitzer defender got a hand up to block the
attempt and force overtime. In the extra period, the Sagehens
took the ball first and on a fourth and eight, Pomona-Pitzer lined
up for the 33-yard field goal attempt. On the snap, the
holder Maki immediately showed the fake and found Robert McNitt
open in the endzone for a touchdown. The PAT failed but the
Loggers were unable to get in the endzone on offense as
Pomona-Pitzer collected the 20-14 overtime win.
Puget Sound was led both in the air and on the ground by
Williams, who finished with 107 yards on 18 carries on the ground
and six-of-16 passing for 56 yards in the air. Trevor Beck
(Chico, Calif.) led the Logger defense with 14.0 tackles, including
1.5 for loss.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by 32-of-52 passing from Caron.
Colin Regan was his favorite target, catching 13 passes for 111
yards. Matt Jevsevar and Alpha Anders led the Sagehen defense
with 6.5 tackles each. The Sagehens attempted 94 plays on the
game, compared with just 46 for Puget Sound, and held onto the ball
for 33:32.
Puget Sound will look to bounce back next week when they head
down to California to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
