FOREST GROVE, Ore. – For the ninth consecutive year, the University of Puget Sound women's soccer team has claimed the Northwest Conference title. The Loggers (16-1-2, 13-1-1) posted a 2-0 victory over Pacific to clinch their ninth consecutive NWC title.
"This never gets old," said head coach Randy Hanson. "This team really, truly earned it every week and I couldn't be more proud of them."
The Loggers need just one win this weekend to claim the title but did not waste any time in earning the victory. Kelly Andersen scored in the 30th minute and Theresa Henle scored in the 73rd minute to seal the victory.
"Pacific played really well," added Hanson. "They had a good game plan and played really well defensively. It was much different than our first game at our place."
Despite a strong defensive effort, Jenny Moore connected with Andersen for the match's first goal. Moore crossed pass to Andersen who scored from five yards out. Henle's score was unassisted.
The Loggers outshot the Boxers (8-8-3, 8-5-2) 25-2 in the match, including nine shots on goal to the Boxers' one. Brittany Hartmann came up with seven saves and Casey Thayer made one save to earn the shutout.
"I thought we did a good job with staying patient," said Hanson. "We stayed patient and found different ways to attack."
The Loggers will finish up their regular season at Linfield tomorrow at noon. The selection show for the Division III women's soccer tournament will occur on Monday at 6 a.m. (PT), which will announce where the Loggers go and who they will play first in the NCAA Tournament.
