Men's Soccer returns to winning ways at Whitman

Box Score

WALLA WALLA, Wash.—The Puget Sound men's soccer team returned to its winning ways Sunday, downing Whitman College 2-0 in Walla Walla, Wash.

The Loggers scored both their goals in the first half. They tallied the match's first three shots and first two corners, all coming before the 11th minute. They withstood some brief Whitman pressure, than broke through on the scoresheet when Carson Swope found himself on a breakaway in the 23rd minute. He dribbled past the defense on the left side of the field and slid the ball into the net, capturing his 10th goal of the year and his 10-plus goal season of his career.

Puget Sound also tallied the match's next four shots, putting up a second goal in the 42nd minute. At the 41:28 mark, Colin McIntosh buried a deflection into the Whitman goal, netting his second goal of the season. Theison Chang was credited with the assist on the goal, his first of the year.

Puget Sound outshot Whitman 8-2 in the second half. Whitman keeper Stuart Ellsworth made two saves in the first, while the Loggers' Nathan King stopped one Missionary shot on goal.

The Whitman offense proved a bit more potent in the second half, registering the half's first two shots, both of which went wide of the net. In the 61st minute, Ryan Rash took a shot on goal, but new Whitman goalie Baker Conte saved it, preventing a 3-0 Puget Sound lead. Oliver Field added another shot on frame in the 69th minute, but again Conte saved it and kept the match at 2-0.

Whitman controlled the ball for much of the last 18 minutes or so, taking the match's final five shots. Two of those shots were on target but saved by King, and another hit the woodwork and bounced out of play.

McIntosh led all players with three shots, while no one had more than one shot on target. In all, Whitman's two keepers made four saves, but they were split evenly between Conte and Ellsworth. King made another three saves to keep a clean sheet, his third of the year.

The Loggers (10-4-0, 9-1-0 Northwest Conference) will continue their four-match road trip next weekend, traveling south to take on Linfield on Saturday, Oct. 26, and Willamette on Sunday, Oct. 27. Both matches will start at 2:30 p.m.
