Acorda-Fey Strikes Twice For 2-1 Logger Win

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. – Sophomore Amalia Acorda-Fey scored her first two goals of the season to propel the Puget Sound women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Whitworth on Saturday. The Loggers (5-2-2, 3-1-2 NWC) fell behind early but controlled much of the first half to complete the comeback.

Acorda-Fey, one of the Loggers leading shot takers, had previously been shut out of the goal. With a pair of goals on Saturday, she is now tied for the team lead.

"Amalia was just due," said head coach Randy Hanson. "That second goal was upper 90. It was just special. Everyone in the place just applauds the second one."

The match began on a sour note for the Loggers as the Pirates (5-5-2, 2-4-2 NWC) earned a penalty kick just a 1:19 in the match. Jami Hegg stepped up and converted the PK to the lower left corner just past the outstretched arm of Casey Thayer.

Down 1-0, the Loggers seemed to put their early breakdown behind them quickly and spent the majority of the half on the attack. Less than 10 minutes after the PK, Acorda-Fey struck for the first time.

She gained control at midfield and dribbled all the way to the top of the 18 yard box. While on her run, she wound up and shot it past the keeper to tie the match up at 1-1.

With halftime approaching, Acorda-Fey went on the attack again. As she dribbled in from the sideline, she quickly launched a shot that bent inside the upper 90 of the far post to put the Loggers up 2-1.

"I was proud of the team for coming back. You never expect in the first minute to be down by one on a PK," commented Hanson. "I was proud that we kept our patience and just played."

The Logger continued to generate the majority of the chances in the second half although Whitworth pushed forward late in the contest in an attempt to tie the match.

In the match, the Loggers owned a 28-5 shot advantage. Acorda-Fey took 10 of those shots and put four on goal. Andrea Stump was there to make seven saves for Whitworth. Neither Thayer nor Lauren Thomas were forced to make a save in the match.

The Loggers remain at home next week for another pair of Northwest Conference matches. They will host Lewis & Clark next Saturday at noon.
