Hanson earns 300th victory in Loggers' 3-0 win

Box Score

TACOMA, Washington – Head coach Randy Hanson earned his 300th career victory as the No. 16-ranked Puget Sound women's soccer team defeated Whitman 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Hanson has complied a record of 300-74-31 in 20 years at Puget Sound. He has been named the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year 10 times. The Loggers have won 13 consecutive NWC season titles, 12 of which came with Hanson at the helm, while compiling a 15-10-5 record in the NCAA tournament. The Loggers' best finish under Hanson was in 2004, when the team made it to the national championship, but ultimately fell after penalty kicks. Hanson has coached 11 All-Americans and 69 All-NWC First Team selections. In addition, he has helped produce 15 Northwest Conference Players of the Year.

The Loggers (14-0-4, 10-0-4 NWC) dominated the game from the opening whistle, taking two corner kicks and getting off two shots in the first 15 minutes. Puget Sound took the lead in the 30th minute on an Amalia Acorda-Fey free kick goal. After Cassie Winter got tackled just outside the box, Acorda-Fey ripped her shot into the upper corner of the net, giving the Missionaries (2-11-6, 2-7-6 NWC) keeper no chance at saving it.

Puget Sound kept the pressure on in the second half, continuing to play in their attacking third for the majority of the game. The team broke through again in the 61st minute. Acorda-Fey found Jordyn McLuen along the left side of the field. McLuen cut inside and tucked her shot inside the far post, and just outside of the goalie's reach. The senior's second goal of the season gave the Loggers a 2-0 lead.

Acorda-Fey scored her second goal of the game and fifth of the weekend in the 78th minute. After receiving a ball from Winter at the top of the box, she took a shot. Haley Case, the Whitman goalie, got a few fingers to the ball, but not enough to keep it out of the back of the net, giving the Loggers a decisive 3-0 lead.

The Loggers outshot Whitman 14-3, and also took more corner kicks (6-1). Acorda-Fey led Puget Sound with five shots, while goalkeeper Lauren Thomas (14-0-4) earned her 15th shutout of the year.

The game also served as Senior Day for the Loggers. Before the match, the eight Puget Sound seniors were honored for their dedication and contributions to the team.

Dating back to last fall, the Loggers are unbeaten in 21 consecutive regular-season games. Puget Sound will next play George Fox on Saturday, November 7. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
