Sonico and Murdock score, Loggers take down Bearcats

SALEM, Oregon – Josh Sonico and Luke Murdock scored, as the University of Puget Sound men's soccer team defeated Willamette, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.

The Loggers (5-2-2, 2-1-2 NWC) came out the aggressor, outshooting the Bearcats (5-3-0, 3-2-0 NWC) 2-1 in the first 14 minutes. In the 15th minute, Puget Sound earned a corner kick. Benjamin Whitham took the corner, which Josh Sonico was able to get his head to, and direct into the net. It was the senior's second goal of the year.

Willamette responded to the goal, outshooting Puget Sound 7-1 through the remainder of the first half. However, goalkeeper Jacob Palmer and the Logger defense was able to keep the Bearcats off the scoreboard.

In the 69th minute, the Loggers added an insurance goal. Luke Murdock received a ball from Chet Selis, and put away his second goal of the year.

Willamette outshot Puget Sound 11-10, while each team took three corner kicks. Four different Loggers tallied two shots. Goalkeeper Jacob Palmer (1-0-2) played all 90 minutes, making four saves, and earning his first career clean sheet.

Puget Sound's next match will be Sunday, October 2, when the team travels to Linfield. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
