Box Score PUYALLUP, Washington – Despite holding a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, the Puget Sound football team fell to Pacific Lutheran, 31-20, at Sparks Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Loggers (3-4, 1-4 NWC) claimed a 20-10 lead when Hans Fortune hit Brennan Schon for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 6:10 remaining in the final period.
From that point on, however, the Lutes (4-3, 3-2 NWC) scored 21 unanswered points. PLU needed just two-and-a-half minutes for Walker LaVoy to connect with DJ Winter for a touchdown and cut the Puget Sound lead to 20-17.
In their ensuing possession, the Loggers were forced to go three-and-out. The Lutes needed just 48 seconds for LaVoy to hit Kellen Westering for a 23-yard touchdown play and take a 24-20 lead.
Puget Sound fumbled in its next possession, setting up one final touchdown for the Lutes.
The Loggers trailed by a touchdown, 10-3, at halftime. Following a scoreless third quarter for both teams, Puget Sound scored 17 consecutive points to open the fourth quarter.
Max McGuinn scored on a three-yard rush, and Michael Andris hit a 44-yard field goal prior to Schon's touchdown.
Sean Whaley (64 yards) and Dustin Harrison (61 yards) tied for the Logger lead with eight receptions. Austin Wagner ran for 65 yards on 12 carries. Fortune finished 32-for-49 and 277 yards through the air.
Defensively, freshman Mushawn Knowles had the best game of his Logger career. Knowles' second interception of the season came in the first quarter, and he totaled 15 tackles – including a tackle for a loss of two yards. Jacob Wuesthoff finished with 13 tackles and picked off his second interception of the year.
The Loggers return to Baker Stadium to host No. 7 Linfield on Saturday, Nov. 5, on Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
