Box Score TACOMA, Washington – Josh Sonico and Dane Schatz scored, and the University of Puget Sound men's soccer team defeated Pacific Lutheran, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon during a rainy Senior Day.
Five Loggers were playing in their final game on Saturday. Brandon Reyes, Jacob Palmer, Nolan Haver, Josh Sonico, and Tristan Stevenson were all honored before the match.
The Loggers (11-5-2, 8-4-2 NWC) and Lutes (10-8-2, 7-6-1 NWC) took the field in rainy and muddy conditions, and PLU appeared to have the better of the play in the first 10 minutes. After a Lute shot was blocked in the ninth minute, Chris Trussel collected the ball, and shot low far post, past the reach of Logger keeper, Jacob Palmer's, dive, to put the visitors ahead, 1-0.
Puget Sound began to gain ground after giving up the goal, at one point taking four consecutive corner kicks. The Loggers tied the game up in the 41st minute. Ezra Kraus crossed the ball to the right side of the box, where Dane Schatz was waiting. The freshman slotted the ball home, near post, for his second goal of the year. The Loggers took the lead in the 67th minute, after Josh Sonico beat a defender on the left side of the box, and smashed his shot into the back of the net. The home team saw the rest of the game run out, giving the five Logger seniors a victory over their crosstown rivals.
Puget Sound outshot Pacific Lutheran, 14-7, while also taking more corner kicks (19-3). Sonico and Cameron Lorek led the Loggers with three shots each. Goalkeeper Jacob Palmer (6-3-2) played all 90 minutes, making three saves.
