Loggers blanked by Bearcats in conference-opener

SALEM, Oregon – Despite doubling up on Willamette's shot attempts, the Puget Sound men's soccer team lost its first Northwest Conference match at the Bearcats, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.

The Loggers (2-2, 0-1 NWC) attempted 14 shots through 90 minutes, half of which were on goal. Willamette (2-3, 0-1 NWC) mustered seven shots, and only two were on target. 

The one shot that stood as the difference came in the 54th minute. The Bearcats' Mack van der Velde netted the game's only goal from 18 yards out.

Puget Sound's leading score, Ezra Kraus, attempted four shots, putting two on goal. His effort to tie the game in the 89th minute was stopped by Willamette goalkeeper Marco Yanez.

Vincent Von Luehrte and Benjamin Whitham both attempted three shots, as Whitham put two on frame.

The Loggers aim for their first NWC win at Linfield on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 12 p.m.
