Chekian finishes with career-high 18 kills in loss to Pacific

TACOMA, WashingtonKatelyn Chekian finished with a career-high 18 kills Friday night, but the Puget Sound volleyball team was unable to keep its winning streak alive when it fell short to Pacific, 3-1 (27-25, 25-18, 33-31, 25-22), in Memorial Fieldhouse. The winning streak ended at six matches.

The Loggers (14-7, 8-4 NWC) came out of the gates on fire as they took an early 5-0 lead in the first set. Jordan Holman was responsible for three kills out of those five points. The Boxers (6-10, 4-6 NWC) were able to fight their way back to even it at 6-6, but Puget Sound didn't trail in the set until late. The Loggers had a 23-18, but Pacific went on a 6-0 run to shift momentum. The Boxers' first lead of the set was 24-23.

The Boxers rode that momentum into the second set and took a commanding two-set lead over the Loggers.

The Loggers demonstrated resilience in the third set when they held a 24-20 lead. The Boxers fought their way back to tie it., 24-24, and it was back-and-forth action from there. Pacific had a 26-25 edge before Holman put away consecutive kills to give Puget Sound the lead. The Boxers answered with consecutive points, but a sneaky kill by Aliah Ayau with a fake set kept the Loggers in it. Eventually, a kill by Maddie Klopcic followed by an ace from Chekian gave the third set to Puget Sound, 33-31.

In the fourth set, the Loggers fought back from a 20-15 deficit to tie it at 22, but they were unable to force a decisive fifth set.

Holman finished 17 kills - one off from tying her career-high - and Ayau came up with 21 assists. The Loggers attacked at a .210 clip, marking just their second loss when hitting .200 or better.

Puget Sound will look to bounce back it hosts first-placed Whitworth (16-2, 11-0 NWC), Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m.
