TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound women's soccer team went the distance - and then some - with No. 18 Pacific Lutheran, as
Radhika Webster Schultz and company handed Pacific Lutheran its first loss of the season, 1-0, in Baker Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
It was a battle of two unbeaten teams until just before the first overtime was set to come to an end. With seconds remaining in the first overtime,
Kalina Cordero launched a cross from the left side into the box. The pass found Webster Schultz, who fired off a low-driven shot that found the bottom right corner for the game-winning goal.
Puget Sound had multiple chances in the first half, most notably when a long-distance shot from
Kylee Roath clipped the bottom of the crossbar but did not cross the goal-line. The PLU keeper was there to thwart Puget Sound's opportunity off the rebound.
Puget Sound dominated possession in the second half. The Loggers earned four corner kicks in the final 30 minutes of regulation, while the Lutes had just two corner kicks the entire second half.
Chaylea Tome made four saves to record her ninth shutout of the season. She holds a 0.18 goals-against everage through 11 games.
For the game, Puget Sound out-shot Pacific Lutheran, 16-7. Puget Sound's pressure forced the Lutes and their goalkeeper to make nine saves - a season-high for PLU.
The Loggers improve to 10-0-1 (6-0-1 NWC), and have now taken down two nationally-ranked teams this season (No. 8 Wheaton, No. 18 Pacific Lutheran), propelling Puget Sound to the top of the Northwest Conference standings.
Puget Sound will look to keep its undefeated season alive when it hosts Lewis & Clark, Sunday, Oct. 10 at 12 p.m.
