Box Score TACOMA, Washington – The Loggers' defense forced three turnovers while Duncan Varela and Silas Washington continued to pound the ball on the ground, but the Puget Sound football team lost its season finale, 30-12, against Whitworth in Baker Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Varela ran for a career-high 146 yards on 26 carries, and Washington totaled 107 yards on 12 carries. It marks the second consecutive week that both Logger backs eclipsed 100 yards on the ground. For Varela, it's his third 100-yard game of the season.
Varela also led the Loggers in receiving with 60 yards on six catches.
Each of Whitworth's first two possession ended with a turnover. A Tre Lewis interception ended the Pirates' first possession in just two plays. Whitworth's second possession ended with a strip sack by Peter Ciari, and the fumble recovered by the Loggers.
Early in the second quarter, Ryan Hickey came up with his first interception of the season.
The Loggers trailed 7-0 through the first 15 minutes of the game. Less than two minutes into the second quarter, however, Washington broke off a 58-yard touchdown run. The PAT was blocked and returned for two points, but the Loggers were determined to keep momentum.
In the ensuing kickoff, Puget Sound recovered an onside kick. On the very next play from scrimmage, Varela broke free for a 53-yard touchdown run.
However, that stood as the Loggers' final score.
Ezekiel Sayavong notched his fourth sack of the season for Puget Sound, as he totaled two tackles for a loss against Whitworth. Ciari and Hayden Baumann also came up with multiple tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
