SPOKANE, Washington – The Puget Sound volleyball team won the first two sets at Whitworth, but the Pirates rallied for a 3-2 (22-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-12) win Saturday night.
Â
The Loggers beat Whitworth in three sets earlier this season in Memorial Fieldhouse (Sept. 17). The two teams are tied for first place in the NWC standings, both with a 7-3 record in conference.
Â
The Loggers were on the brink of another 3-0 win over the defending NWC champions Saturday. A kill by
Katelyn Chekian gave Puget Sound a 24-23 edge in the third set, but a kill by Whitworth followed by two Puget Sound errors allowed the Pirates to claim the set and momentum.
Â
Whitworth opened the fourth set with a 6-1 run, and the Loggers never cut the gap closer than four points for the rest of the set.
Â
The fifth set was tightly contested, and a kill by
Avery Allemann gave the Loggers a 9-8 lead. But that's when Whitworth went on a 4-0 run to take the lead for good.
Â
Three Loggers posted double-digits kills.
Maddie Klopcic and
Sara Olsson both finished with 11 kills, and Allemann added 10.
Logan Winn totaled 40 assists, marking her second match of the weekend with at least 40 assists, and her fifth such match this fall.
Â
Puget Sound returns home next week to host George Fox (Oct. 21) and Pacific (Oct. 22).
