Game Recap: Football |

After a strong start, Puget Sound lost to Pacific during Homecoming weekend

TACOMA, Washington – Silas Washington found the end zone twice, and Mason Binning scored through the air and on the ground, but the Puget Sound football team lost its Homecoming game against Pacific, 42-21, Saturday afternoon.

The Loggers' defense forced the Boxers to go three-and-out in the game's opening drive, and Puget Sound's offense was quick to score first. On fourth-and-one, Washington ran for 27 yards down to Pacific's 48-yard yard line.

Three plays later, Binning threw a short pass over the middle to Washington. Puget Sound's senior running back looked like was going to get tripped up, but Washington kept his balance as he sprinted down the far sideline for a 47-yard score.

Puget Sound's defense remained locked in and forced Pacific into another three-and-out, but the Loggers failed to put points on the board when it turned the ball over on downs. That's when momentum shifted to the Boxers' favor.

Pacific needed just eight plays to go 86 yards and tie the game, 7-7, just before the end of the first quarter. The Boxers then took a 14-7 lead with 5:31 left in the second quarter.

The Loggers were poised to enter halftime in a 14-14 tie when Washington punched in a six-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds remaining in the second quarter. However, it took just two offensive plays for Pacific to claim a 21-14 lead heading into the break.

The Boxers cushioned their lead by scoring twice in the third quarter, and the Loggers were held scoreless in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

Late in the third quarter the Loggers leaned on running back Henry Hernandez. He carried the ball eight times for 47 yards during a drive that set up a Binning one-yard keeper for Puget Sound's third touchdown.

During Puget Sound's next possession in the fourth quarter, Binning connected with Izaiah Jerenz three times for 57 yards. On third-and-nine from Pacific's nine-yard line, Binning hit Joe Gallgher in the middle of the field, and Gallagher was tackled just a couple yards shy from the goal line. The Loggers were unable to get the ball in the end zone on fourth-and-two.

Washington finished the game with 94 rushing yards and 58 receiving yards. Gallagher, a freshman, finished with a season-high 10 catches and 91 yards. Jerenz had 88 receiving yards on five catches.

Amarian Culpepper had a team-high 10 tackles. He leads the squad in tackles with 33 this year.

The Loggers play at George Fox Saturday, Oct. 15.
