TACOMA, Washington – Each of the Puget Sound men's basketball team's starters scored at least nine points, but the Loggers' comeback bid fell short against Whitman, 66-62, in Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday evening.
Â
The Blues held a double-digit lead, 36-26, at halftime, but the Loggers made a bid to at least tie the game late in the second half.
Â
The Blues were up 57-50 with five minutes left in regulation, but
Taj Phillips kept the Loggers within striking distance by hitting a 3-pointer. Two minutes later, the Blue held 61-56 edge, and Phillips once again knocked down a big trey to make it a one-possession game, 61-59. Â
Â
That was as close as Puget Sound would get, however, as the Blues promptly answered with a 3-pointer of their own.
Â
Mussie Teclemariam led the Loggers in scoring with 15 points, while
Liam Ruttledge (11 points) and
Will Pohland (10 points) both scored in double figures.
Grant Erickson and Phillips both added nine points.
Â
The Loggers don't play again for another two weeks when they host Millsaps, Dec. 17.
