TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound baseball team made its home debut Friday, and it split non-conference games against NCAA D-II St. Martin's, and familiar foe Pacific Lutheran.
Â
Puget Sound 7, St. Martin's 1
Owen Shellhammer earned his second win in his second start of the season, while
Dylan Joyce and
Jonas Kim finished with three hits each to top St. Martin's, 7-1.
Â
Shellhammer struck out six and allowed one unearned run on three hits in his five innings on the mound.
Â
The Saints (0-3) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to a passed ball. The following inning, Puget Sound broke through for its first run on a strange play. With runners on second and third,
Gio Parascondola struck out swinging, but the pitch was in the dirt and careened up the first base line. Parascondola was safe at first and
Kyle Strash came in to score.
Â
An RBI infield single by Kim later in the fifth inning gave the Loggers a 2-1 lead.
Â
Strash and Joyce led off the seventh inning with consecutive singles, and a balk allowed the Loggers to have runners on second and third with nobody out. Parascondola and Kim hit consecutive singles to cushion the lead to 4-1.
Â
In the eighth innings, Joyce hit a two-run double to centerfield, and Drew Kamhihara also drove in a run with a double to center.
Â
Davis Miller earned his first save of the season by recording the final six outs on just 16 pitches.
Â
Â
Puget Sound 3, Pacific Lutheran 10 (8 inn.)
Dylan Joyce belted his third home run of the season, but Pacific Lutheran scored six unanswered runs to win in eight innings, 10-3. The game was called short due to darkness.
Â
The Lutes took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but
Cody Hirano answered in the next frame by hitting an RBI single that scored
Jonas Kim and allowed
Gabe Huante to move to third. During the very next at-bat, Huante scored on a wild pitch to give the Loggers a 2-1 lead.
Â
The Lutes put up three runs in the top of the third, but Joyce kept the Loggers within a run with his solo blast in the bottom of the third. From there on, however, PLU scored six answered runs.
Â
Hirano,
Kyle Strash, and Maka Murashige each finished with two hits. Murashige notched a double and a stolen base. Kim had a three-hit performance against PLU.
Â
Puget Sound's next game is at St. Martin's Sunday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m.
