TACOMA, Washington – Cal Hansen tallied his fifth double-double of the season to lead the Puget Sound men's basketball team to a 73-66 win over Whitman in Memorial Fieldhouse Friday night. Before the game, Hansen was surprised with a commemorative ball to celebrate reaching 1,000 career points with the Loggers.
Â
Hansen matched his season-high in scoring with 22 points – the third time this season he has hit that mark. He also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Grant Erickson grabbed 11 boards in the winning effort, and he added eight points.
Paul Johnson scored 15 points, nearly half of which were from the free-throw line where he shot 7-for-8.
Â
Whitman (9-12, 7-6 NWC) held a 31-27 lead at halftime, but Puget Sound (9-14, 4-9 NWC) tied the game, 38-38, thanks to a bucket in the paint by
Cal Hansen just three minutes into the second half.
Â
The Blues briefly took a 47-45 lead with 13:13 on the clock, but an old fashion three-point play by
Will Pohland sparked a 7-0 run for the Loggers – and they never relinquished the lead from there.
Â
Puget Sound's lead reached 12 points, 65-53, when Hansen scored up close again with six minutes left in regulation.
Â
Puget finishes its home season by hosting Whitworth Saturday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m.
