TACOMA, Washington – On Senior Day, senior
Georgia Lavinder scored a team-high 14 points to lead the No. 19 Puget Sound women's basketball team to a 76-63 win over Whitworth in Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday evening.
Â
Lavinder shot 5-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-7 from 3-point range.
Samantha Swartout scored 12 points in the winning effort, and
Kennedy Brown netted 12 points - mostly from driving to the basket.
Â
Katie Minnehan had a devilish game, leading the Loggers in rebounds (6), assists (6), and steals (6).
Â
The Pirates (9-14, 4-10 NWC) jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the game, but then the Loggers (18-4, 11-3 NWC) went on a ridiculous 19-0 run. That run featured two Lavinder treys in under a 45-second span – igniting the crowd and forcing Whitworth to call a timeout.
Â
The first quarter ended with
Isabella Reed hitting a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
Â
In the fourth quarter, Whitworth cut the Loggers' lead to just five points, 63-58, with 3:16 on the clock. Just two minutes later, Reed hit another trey to put the Loggers ahead by double digits once again, 71-61.
Â
Before the start of Saturday's game, the Loggers celebrated their two seniors:
Georgia Lavinder and
Sofia Lavinder.
Â
Puget Sound makes the short drive to Parkland Tuesday, Feb. 15, for a 6 p.m. tipoff at Pacific Lutheran.
