Game Recap: Baseball |

Trio of Loggers homer between two wins at Whittier

WHITTIER, California – Dylan Joyce homered twice, and Gio Parascondola and Jonas Kim both cleared the outfield fences, as the Puget Sound baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader at Whittier Saturday.

Puget Sound 7, Whittier 4
After mashing 12 home runs in 2021, Joyce belted his first home run of 2022 in the first inning against the Poets. It was the first of his two solo homers. Joyce also belted a long ball in the fifth inning to give Puget Sound a 4-1 lead.

In the third inning, Makana Murashige added to the Loggers' 1-0 lead by hitting a two-run double to centerfield.

Following Joyce's second homer of the game in the fifth, Murashige was hit by a pitch and he came in to score on a double hit by Parascondola.

Puget Sound starting pitcher Owen Shellhammer earned the win by allowing just one earned run in six innings. Joyce locked in a two-inning save, and he finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with four runs scored.

Murashige matched Joyce's three hits in four at-bats.

Puget Sound 11, Whittier 7 (10 inn.)
The Loggers once again kept the pressure on the Poets early as Parascondola blasted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. Jonas Kim hit an RBI double to give the Loggers a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Whittier rallied to make it a one-run game, 5-4, and the Poets forced extra innings when they scored the game-tying run on a Puget Sound error in the eighth inning.

Cody Hirano led off the top of the 10th inning with a single, and Kyle Strash moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. After Joyce drew a walk, Murashige ripped a single to score Hirano. Parascondola followed with a two-run single, and later in the inning Kim crushed a three-run homer.

Joe Schwab earned the win after pitching three shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Parascondola finished the game 3-for-6 with four RBI, and Hirano also went 3-for-6 at the dish. Strash and Kim collected two hits, each.

The Loggers have one more game in California this weekend – at Redlands Sunday, Feb. 6. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
