Chekian's 15 kills not enough in five-set loss at Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Oregon – For the second consecutive night, the Puget Sound volleyball team competed in a five-set match. Saturday, however, resulted in a loss at Pacific, 3-2.

The Loggers opened Saturday's contest with a 4-0 run in the first set. The Boxers battled back to take a 10-9 lead, but then Puget Sound went on a 7-0 run. Katelyn Chekian put away consecutive kills during the run, and Chloe Akiona-Bannan tallied a service ace.

The Loggers won the first set, 25-20, but Pacific took the second set.

Similarly to the first set, the Loggers jumped out to a four-point lead, 5-1, in the second set. However, Pacific closed out the set with a 7-1 run.

Once again in the third set, Puget Sound set the tone early. This time, the Loggers raced out to a 5-0 lead and handedly won, 25-16.

The tide began to turn in the third set, when it was Pacific running out to a 7-1 lead. The Boxers forced a decisive fifth set, where the Loggers found themselves in a quick 10-2 hole that they could not climb out of.

Chekian finished with a season-high 15 kills, and Logan Winn totaled 32 assists.

Four Loggers recorded double-digit digs, led by 22 from Akiona-Bannan.

The Loggers' road stretch continues next week at Willamette and Linfield, Sept. 30 – Oct. 1.
