Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Senior game ends in 2-1 victory for Logger men's soccer

TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound men's soccer team clinched a 2-1 victory in their final regular-season home match against the Pacific University Boxers on Sunday afternoon at Baker Stadium.

In a tightly contested first half, the Loggers and Boxers went scoreless with both teams recording almost equal numbers of shots – five for the Boxers and six for the Loggers, but only one shot on goal for each team.

The action picked up in the second half as the Loggers broke through in the 50th minute. Stuart Methner , a senior, delivered a precise cross from the right side of the field, which Etienne Polak headed into the top right corner of the goal and over the goalkeepers grasp. Just minutes later, the Loggers made a similar play off a throw-in, Methner threw the ball in from the right side found senior Liam Elliott, who headed it to Rhys Foote's feet and sent it in to the goal. The goalkeeper quickly grabbed it out, but not before the ball crossed the goal line, doubling the Loggers' lead.

In the 77th minute, a foul by Elliott in the goal box granted the Boxers a penalty kick opportunity and tighten the gap. Tait Kuchenbrod successfully converted the penalty to the right side of the net, as senior Andrew Matheny dove to the left, but Matheny's efforts proved crucial, making two crucial saves in the team's winning effort.

The Loggers dominated the second half outshooting the Boxers 10-4 and tallying seven shots on goal compared to the Boxers' three. The Boxers had four corner kick opportunities, while the Loggers had only two.

This all came after ten seniors were celebrated for their achievements with the Loggers: Luke Ahearn, Marko Babiak, Ian Cameron, Liam Elliott, Jesus Gutierrez, Chris Haley, Graham Hall, Shane Ivich, Andrew Matheny, and Stuart Methner

This marks the conclusion of the home match season, but men's soccer will continue to play in Tacoma, this time at Pacific Lutheran University on Wednesday, Nov. 1st at 7 p.m.
