Loggers battle in 3-1 loss to their Lutes rivals

PARKLAND, Wash. – In a Wednesday night matchup at East Field, the Puget Sound men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to town rivals the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes.

The Lutes wasted no time opening the scoring just eight minutes into the game. Robby Guyer delivered a pass to Trevor Thompson who skillfully moved past two Logger defenders and slotted the ball into the far right side of the goal. Despite a leaping effort from Ryan Saunders, the Lutes secured an early lead.

In the 32nd minute, the Lutes double their advantage in a similar fashion to the first goal. A long pass from Guyer once again found Thompson who edged past the Loggers defenders and sends the ball into the right side of the net past Saunders. However, the Loggers narrowed the gap just a minute later when Lutes, Nicholas Gaston recorded a yellow card and the Loggers were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box. Marko Babiak skillfully placed the kick right into the left corner of the net and over the goalkeepers head, stunning the Lutes. The Loggers went into the half trailing 2-1, the Lutes outshot the Loggers 11-3, but Saunders recorded two saves to keep the game within reach.

The second half witnessed a fierce back-and-forth battle that the Lutes ultimately dominated. The Loggers committed a few fouls near the penalty box that put them in trouble, but the Logger defense held them off. In the last few minutes, Jake Aigner made a promising shot to the right side of the net, but it was saved by Gaston, and the Lutes Guyer unleashed an impressive shote that was deflected by Ian Cameron and saved by Saunders. The Lutes extended their lead a minute later when the Logger defense was ill prepared for a long ball that moved past Saunders and sent Guyer straight to the net for the clear open shot.

Corner kicks heavily favored the Lutes, who earned nine opportunities, while the Loggers managed just five, similarly the Loggers tallied nine fouls to the Lutes five.

The Loggers, with a 6-4-5 in the Northwest Conference will compete in their last regular season match on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2:30 p.m. in McMinnville, Ore. against Linfield University, with a 4-8-2 NWC record.
