TACOMA, Wash. – Rivals, the Pacific Lutheran Lutes, posted a six goal performance Wednesday night to defeat the Puget Sound Loggers 6-2.
Marko Babiak opened the scoring for the Loggers in the 11
th minute, skillfully maneuvering around three defenders finding the back of the net and scoring deep into the right pocket of the goal. However, the match shifted just six minutes later when Craig Johnson, the Lutes leading scorer with 12 goals, netted the game-winner after an initial save by the Logger goalkeeper,
Ryan Saunders.
The Lutes took the lead in the 25
th minute when Robby Guyer received a pass from the left side, turned the ball, and slotted it into the right pocket, making it 2-1.
Liam Elliott leveled the score in the 33
rd minute after the Lutes' goalkeeper blocked a free kick attempt, only for Elliott to pounce on the rebound and send it into the opposite side of the net.
After the half, the Lutes went on a three goal rampage that began with a penalty kick from Johnson, his second goal of the night. Shortly after, Brandt Kelly found the net in the 65
th minute, followed by Guyer's second goal in the 69
th minute.
The Loggers struggled to generate shots in the second half, managing only one. In the 78
th minute, Trevor Thompson sealed the result, dribbling in a goal off a 50-yard pass, 6-2.
The Lutes outshot the Loggers 11-4 on goal, leaving Saunders with five saves.
Puget Sound men's soccer will be at home on East Field, Saturday, October 7
th, at 2:30 p.m.
