TACOMA, Wash. – Logger Volleyball added to the excitement of Homecoming Weekend with a thrilling win, defeating Pacific University in five sets, with scores of 25-16, 25-15, 22-25, 22-25, 17-15. The victory pushes the team's record to 5-3 in the Northwest Conference standings and an impressive 12-4 overall.
In the opening set, trailing 8-11, Puget Sound put up a remarkable comeback by scoring eight consecutive points to jump ahead 14-11. The Loggers never conceded the lead for the rest of the set, largely thanks to the defense of
Samantha Keightley with 11 digs. The team was able to keep Pacific to a hitting percentage of -.056.
Once again, the Loggers found their rhythm midway through the second set, building a commanding 17-8 lead, with two crucial kills by
Sarah Johnsen.
Mackenzie Leith and
Katelyn Chekian each added three kills to the set, while
Logan Winn provided eight assists. Both
Avery Allemann and Keightley added two service aces each in the set. As a team, the Loggers hit for .423 in the set.
The third set witnessed a role reversal as the Boxers disrupted the Logger offense, taking the lead at 13-14. Puget Sound was unable to recover and ended up losing the set 22-25.
Erin Fagan provided some offensive spark hitting at a .455 percentage, but it was not enough. Set four seemed just as challenging for the Loggers, only able to tie it up late at 21-21 before Pacific put it away at 22-25. The final set saw 11 lead changes with neither team able to pull away. It wasn't until
Akira Anderson's service game at 15-15 that the Loggers found the points needed for the match win.
Puget Sound recorded 58 kills on the night against the Boxers' 44 kills. Chekian led all Loggers with 13 kills, while
Avery Allemann provided 10 blocks with
Logan Winn setting up her teammates with 44 assists.
The Loggers start the second half of the NWC schedule next Friday, October 13
th, when they take on George Fox in Newberg, Oregon followed by a match against Linfield on Saturday, October 14
th.
