SALEM, Ore. – Despite
Logan Winn's impressive 25 assists for Puget Sound on Friday night, the Willamette University Bearcats triumphant three-set win ended in set scores of 22-25, 20-25, and 19-25.
The Loggers managed 31 kills on the night, with
Erin Fagan leading the Loggers with eight kills on a .217 hitting percentage and four service aces.
Mia Fedota and
Avery Allemann followed with six kills each, while Fedota boasted an impressive .600 hitting rate.
Samantha Keightley delivered 13 digs and the Loggers had ten service aces, but struggled with 12 service errors.
In the first set, the Loggers were unable to catch up with the Bearcats who secured multiple four-point runs. Although the Loggers headed a five-point run of their own to bring the score close at 20-21, a service error ended any hope of a comeback, the Bearcats maintained their lead for the majority of the match.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with the Bearcats building an 8-4 lead. The Loggers rallied back, tightening the gap to 9-8, Willamette took it right back marking a 12-8 lead that the Loggers closed in on at 13-16. It wasn't until the last four-point run that the Loggers struggled to find consistency, after every kill from Olivia Cadien, Fagan countered with a kill of her own, it was not enough, and the Bearcats took the set with a score of 25-20.
The third set was led by the Loggers who initially held a 5-1 lead. Willamette quickly responded with a nine-point run spearheaded by Riley Cedergreen, capitalizing on five attack errors by the Loggers and securing three kills. The match remained somewhat back and forth until the Loggers embarked on a much-needed run when the score stood at 10-18. Akira Anderson served for six consecutive points, allowing the Loggers to narrow the gap. However, the last four points were dominated by two Bearcat kills and two service aces by Cedergreen to finish in three sets.
The Loggers will travel to Pacific University in their final regular season Northwest Conference match on Saturday, Nov. 4, match time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
