Smith scores twice in loss to Lewis and Clark College

PORTLAND, Ore. – After defeating Lewis & Clark in the season opener in September, the Loggers looked to repeat that result on Saturday. Competing in their first evening contest of the season, Puget Sound struggled to control the running game of the Pioneers resulting in a 24-66 defeat. The loss moves Puget Sound's record to 3-5 on the season and 2-4 in Northwest Conference play.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the first quarter with the Loggers limiting the Pio's to just 41 total yards.  However, Puget Sound was unable to move the ball into Lewis & Clark territory in each of its two possessions despite quarterback Mason Binning completing 8-of-11 passes for 62 yards.

It was in the second quarter that Lewis & Clark took control scoring 38 points on 145 rushing yards and 124 reception yards. The Loggers were able to again put up numbers with their passing game, but struggled to convert on third down plays. Down by 21, the Loggers were able to get on the board with a 57-yard pass to Liam Smith from Binning for the touchdown. Unable to make a stop on Lewis & Clark's next possession, Puget Sound found itself down 6-28 when Binning again found his target with a 48-yard touchdown to Izaiah Jerenz. Before the game got to the half, the Pio's added to their score going into the locker room up 38-12.

In the second half, the Puget Sound defensive struggles continued with Lewis & Clark extending its lead. The Loggers were able to find the end zone in the third quarter when running back Henry Hernandez rushed two yards for a touchdown to end a 74-yard drive. The third quarter ended with the score at 18-59. Each team was able to add to their score in the fourth quarter with Puget Sound completing its third passing touchdown of the game with Smith scoring again, this time by a throw from Hayden Teeter. The Loggers finished the game with 391 passing yards on 40 team receptions. Jerenz led the team with 14 receptions and 122 yards, while Smith led with a 57-yard receiving touchdown, going 124 yards on seven receptions.
