TACOMA, Washington – It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the tale of two halves.
The No. 20/16 Puget Sound women's basketball trailed Willamette by 10 points at half, but the Loggers toppled the Bearcats in the second half to seal the win, 67-45.
The Loggers entered the third quarter trailing 31-21.
Kennedy Brown set the tone early in the period by driving to the basket for the first two points of the quarter.
Sophie Nilsson also scored in the pain twice to put the Loggers on a 6-0 run.
Four minutes into the third, Brown knocked down a 3-pointer to bring the Loggers to within a point, 34-33. Following a defensive stop,
Grace Pytynia-Hillier hit a step-back jumper to give the Loggers their first lead of the game since a brief 2-0 edge.
Nilsson connected from 3-point range late in the third quarter to give Puget Sound a 43-38 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Loggers left little doubt in the fourth, outscoring the Bearcats, 24-7. The Loggers got their first double-digit lead of the game, 51-40, when
Paige Gerhart scored in the pain midway through the fourth.
Brown led all players in scoring with 20 points, and
Samantha Swartout added 16 points. Nilsson finished one rebound shy of a double-double, totaling 13 points and nine rebounds.
Puget Sound hosts George Fox Saturday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m.
