PORTLAND, Oregon – Mikayla Newman hit her first home run of the season, and
Jessica Moore totaled five hits as the Puget Sound softball team split a doubleheader at Lewis & Clark Sunday.

Mikayla Newman homered in the third inning, and
Jessica Moore went 3-for-3 to lead the Loggers to a 7-5 win in Sunday's first game.

It was an eventful first inning, with the teams combining for five runs.
Hailee Ueyama led off the game with a triple, and then Newman drew a walk and stole second base. Moore and Savanna smith hit consecutive sac flies to give the Loggers a 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first.

Newman gave the Loggers a 4-3 lead when she launched a solo shot to right-center field in the third stanza.

Lewis & Clark took a 4-3 lead after four innings, but the Loggers rallied for three runs in the fifth.
Emily Moore,
Jessica Moore, and
Savanna Smith hit three consecutive singles, and an e game. error allowed
Emily Moore to score and tie the game.

Two batters later,
Kendall Gantz belted a two-run double to give Puget Sound a two-run lead. This time, the Loggers held on to the lead for good.

Gantz earned the victory in the circle by pitching all seven innings.

Savanna Smith each collected two hits, but the Loggers lost the second game Sunday, 6-3.

Once again, the Loggers put together a solid first ining. Ueyama led off with a bunt single,
Mikayla Newman followed with a single, and then
Emily Moore reached on a fielder's choice where all runners were safe.
Kendall Gantz drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run of the game.

Similarly to the first game, the Pioneers answered right back in the bottom of the first inning – this time scoring four runs.

Puget Sound cut the deficit in half, 4-2, when Smith hit an RBI single in the third inning. Smith hit an RBI single again in the fifth inning, but that's as close as the Loggers would get.

The Loggers return home next week, March 18-19, to host Whitworth.
