Game Recap: Baseball |

Joyce hits two home runs at George Fox

NEWBERG, Oregon – Dylan Joyce hit two home runs and totaled five hits, but the Puget Sound baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at George Fox Sunday afternoon.

Puget Sound 5, George Fox 6
Dylan Joyce hit his 10th home run of the season, but the Bruins rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to beat the Loggers, 6-5.

In just the second at-bat of the game, Joyce gave the Loggers a 1-0 lead with a single swing. Puget Sound held that narrow lead until the Bruins broke through against Logger starting pitcher Brett Harvey in the fourth inning. George Fox began the bottom the frame with an inside-the-park home run. Later in the inning, a two-out wild pitch allowed George Fox to take a 2-1 lead.

After staying silent for several consecutive innings, the Puget Sound bats broke through for four runs in the seventh inning. Mitch Nabeta and Drew Kamihara hit consecutive one-out singles, and then Joyce tied the game with an RBI base hit.

Makana Murashige was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nathan Blocher lifted a sac fly to score Kamihara, and Gabe Huante followed with a two-run single to push the Loggers' lead to 5-3.

Joyce finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate. Kamihara, Huante, and Nabeta each collected two hits.

Harvey allowed only one walk and five hits in his seven-inning start, but some misfortune led to four earned runs.

Puget Sound 5, George Fox 6
Dylan Joyce crushed his 11th home run of 2023 in the fourth inning, but once again the Bruins pulled away in the latter innings for a 6-5 win.

The Loggers were in a 2-0 hole entering the third inning, but Joyce put the Loggers on the board with a solo shot.

The Bruins answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Puget Sound tied the game in its very next turn to bat.

Nathan Blocher led off the fifth inning with a walk, Cody Hirano hit an infield single, and William Gross drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out.

Sean Murphy drove in the inning's first run with a sac fly, and Drew Kamihara followed with an RBI single. A wild pitch allowed Gross to score, and Murashige tied the game, 5-5, with a sac fly that scored Kamihara.

The Loggers return home to host Pacific Lutheran, April 1-2.
