Loggers celebrate seniors at Cheney Stadium

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound baseball team celebrated its seven seniors at Cheney Stadium Wednesday evening for the Loggers' final game in Tacoma this season. The Loggers almost overcame a six-run deficit against NCAA D-II St. Martin's, but the Saints held on for a 7-5 win.

Cheney Stadium is home of the Seattle Mariners' triple-A affiliate, the Tacoma Rainiers.

Before the start of the game, the Loggers paid tribute to the class of 2023 and their loved ones: William Gross, Dylan Joyce, Gabe Huante, Joshua Carrillo, William Campbell, Jack McCullar, and Peter Fagan.

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Loggers got a run back in the bottom of the stanza when Joyce hit an RBI double.

St. Martin's then scored five unanswered runs, but the Loggers' second run was the most emphatic hit of the night.

Leading off the home half of the sixth inning, Gio Parascondola belted a home run over the left-field fence.

Two batters later, Aidan Sullivan hit a double, and a couple of wild pitches allowed him to score.

Parascondola hit an RBI single in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 7-4. In the eighth inning, Kellen Krebs was hit by a pitch with one out. After a walk drawn by Drew Kamihara, and a single by Davis Franklin, Krebs came in to score on a Saints' error, making it a 7-5 game.

Still down by two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Puget Sound brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but the Loggers were unable to capitalize.

Kamihara, Joyce, Franklin, and Parascondola each finished the game with two hits.

Ethan Rattie, Joe Schwab, and Cal Johnson combined to limit the Saints to just one hit in the final 4.1 innings.

Puget Sound returns to Northwest Conference games at Whitworth, April 15-16.
