TACOMA, Wash. – In a down to the wire contest, the University of Puget Sound Loggers women's volleyball team notched a hard-fought victory against St. Benedict in the Memorial Fieldhouse today during the Puget Sound Premiere tournament. The Loggers emerged victorious with scores of 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 25-11, and 15-11 to open their season with a 1-0 record.
Puget Sound 3, College of Saint Benedict 2
The Loggers started strong, capturing the first set 25-23 with 14 kills on a .227 hitting percentage. St. Benedict roared back to claim the second and third sets, tallying 15 and 9 kills respectively. However, Puget Sound found a new gear in the fourth set, dominating with 13 kills and allowing St. Benedict only 5 kills. The fifth set saw both teams locked in a fierce battle, with the Loggers finally pulling away to clinch the match with an 8-kill, .231-hitting percentage effort.
Mackenzie Leith spearheaded the Logger attack with 13 kills, closely followed by Mia Fedota with 9 and Katelyn Chekian contributing 8. On the service line, Samantha Keightley led with 3 aces, alongside Avery Allemann and Akira Anderson, each with 2. Allemann was also formidable at the net, racking up 5 blocks. Logan Winn excelled setting for 20 assists, complemented by Randi Rush with 18.
On the defensive end, Katelyn Chekian shone with 18 digs, while Samantha Keightley was right behind her with 17. Winn also displayed her all-around skills with an impressive 13 digs.
Puget Sound registered 53 kills on a .166 hitting percentage, compared to St. Benedict's 48 kills at .129. The Loggers also outperformed in assists (45-39), aces (10-6), and digs (80-74), establishing their dominance on both offense and defense.
Puget Sound 3, Adrian College 1
Building upon their season-opening win, the Puget Sound Loggers Women's Volleyball team continued their day with an impressive 4-set win against Adrian College (Adrian, Mich.) at the Memorial Fieldhouse to conclude day 1 of the Puget Sound Premiere tournament. The final scores read 25-22, 25-17, 14-25, and 25-17, propelling the Loggers to a 2-0 record for the day and season.
Mia Fedota led the Loggers with 10 kills and 6 blocks. Samantha Keightley contributed with 5 service aces and 15 digs. Logan Winn amassed a total of 21 assists along with 10 digs, and Avery Allemann providing both offensive and defensive strength with 6 kills matching her 6 blocks.
After their victorious win against Adrian, the Puget Sound Loggers are gearing up for a challenging double-header today. They will first face off against Eastern at 2 p.m., followed by a highly anticipated match against PLU at 5 p.m. Both games will be held at the Memorial Fieldhouse to close out the tournament.
