SPOKANE, Wash. – Sarah Johnsen led the Loggers with eight kills, and
Samantha Keightley had 15 defensive digs, but it was not enough for the Loggers to pick up the win against Whitworth University on Friday evening.
Puget Sound was slow to find its rhythm in the first set and was unable to create scoring runs to disrupt the Pirates with the set ending in a 14-25 score.
In the second set, down 6-1, the Loggers tied it up at 6-6 with five consecutive points and
Erin Fagan recording two kills. However, Whitworth was able to respond and prevent Puget Sound from taking a lead the remainder of the set with the score ending in a 25-15 loss.
The third set ended up to be a back and forth battle with 16 different lead changes. Down 21-18, Puget Sound regained the lead after Johnsen delivered two kills and a service ace by
Logan Winn. The Loggers were not able to make another comeback at that point before Whitworth finished the match with the third set win by a score of 25-23.
Whitworth hit for .300 on the night, and were able to hold off any offensive threat by the Loggers.
Puget Sound moves its Northwest Conference record to 3-2 on the season, and 10-3 overall. The Loggers will stay on the road to finish off the Eastern Washington road swing when they play in Walla Walla, Wash. on Saturday against Whitman College.
