WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Puget Sound women's basketball team loses in overtime, 64-61 to Whitman College on Saturday night.
The Whitman Blues started the scoring adding five points to the board before Ayana Peterson-Henry snagged a layup, then blocked the Blues on defense. The Blues took the lead from there going on a seven point run with 2:11 left in the first period and outshooting the Loggers 17-11. The Loggers would hold the Blues to nine points in the second period, and tie it up 26-26 going into halftime.
After falling behind by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Loggers regained an advantage in the third quarter, leading by six at the 2:47 mark and shooting at a 50% rate. The Blues dialed it back in with a layup and a 3-point play to reduce the deficit to one point going into the final period.
The Loggers quickly made two consecutive plays to the hoop for a five-point early lead that the Blues chipped away at and tied back up 47-47 with 3:16 left in regulation. It was a back-and-fourth game from there with three ties, the Loggers took the lead with consecutive made free-throws from Kennedy Brown. The Blues Natalie Lundberg scored a layup with 0:17 left, but couldn't score again tying the game 54-54.
In overtime, the Loggers stretched out for a five point run led by Addison Reardon and Paige Gerhart that finished with 3:36 left in OT. Whitman jumped ahead with a three pointer from Christiane Carlisle with just 35 seconds left, the Loggers fought hard going point-for-point, back and forth free-throws, but ultimately could not get off another point to catch an edge.
Sophie Nilsson led with 13 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Paige Gerhart scored 11 points, made six steals and four rebounds. Katie Minnehan led with eight rebounds, seven assists, and went 3-for-5 from the floor for seven points.
The Logger women's basketball team plays tomorrow, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. in Spokane at Whitworth University.
