PARKLAND, Wash. — Dezman Baker landed a double-double scoring a career-high 25 points going 10-of-13 from the floor and a game-high 10 rebounds as the Puget Sound men's basketball team completed the sweep and defeated the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes 86-77 on Wednesday night in Olson Auditorium.
Liam Ruttledge also dropped a game-high 25 points shooting an impressive 10-of-14 from the floor and 4-6 from beyond the arc. Freshman
Hugo Rutherfurd helped leading with two blocks, four rebounds, four assists and 14 points in the win.
Taj Phillips made a game-high six assists adding seven points to the score.
The men's game started off much like the Logger women's game just before, evenly matched and tying it up in every other play with the Loggers largest lead at 38-33 with 1:33 left in the half. The Loggers had the shooting advantage with a 51.6% (16-31) shooting rate, while the Lutes were one basket behind shooting for 48.4% (15-31) going into halftime.
Puget Sound maintained the lead throughout the second half, except for six ties and a single lead change from the Lutes as Sam Noland took a short-lived lead with a pair of free-throws with 13:20 left on the clock. Ruttledge dominated the second half offensively while Baker took command defensively the duo bookended a 12-2 stretch for the Loggers with 4:49 left in regulation, 71-61. The Lutes chipped away at the Loggers going point for point, but never reducing the deficit to more than seven. The Loggers made 6-of-6 free-throws in the last 40 seconds to end the game.
The Loggers scored 17-of-26 (65.4%) in the second half finishing with an impressive 33-of-57 (57.9%), while the Lutes shot for 50%.
The Loggers return home on Friday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. to face George Fox University in Memorial Fieldhouse.
