Loggers Scrape By With A Tie Against The Pirates

TACOMA, Washington (October 12, 2024) - The Whitworth Pirates (6-3-1, 4-1-1 NWC) dominated the Loggers (4-3-2, 3-1-2 NWC) earlier today, but goalkeeper Ryan Saunders kept the Loggers in the game with the help of his defensive line. Whitworth controlled much of the first half with seven shots and four corners compared to the Loggers' three shots and two corners.

In the 22nd minute Saunders scrambled to the top of his box and tripped up Clayton Crockett, receiving a yellow card for his efforts. The resulting penalty kick was calmly scored by Cole Friesen to solidify the Pirates lead.

After a rousing half-time talk from Coach Steve Mohn, the Loggers started the second half strong. Just five minutes after the kick, Liam Elliott scored a header off a corner by Shane Ivich to even out the game 1-1. Both teams continued fighting for the lead but neither were able to add to the scoreboard.

Frustrations were evident as 19 fouls were called and six yellow cards handed out by the referee, mostly against the Loggers. The two teams will meet again at the very end of the season in Spokane to find out who comes out on top.
