TACOMA, Washington (December 29, 2024) – The University of Puget Sound Loggers' second-half comeback fell short as they lost to the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, 82-70.
After winning the tipoff, the Loggers took an early 11-6 lead. However, Santa Cruz's defense kept the Loggers from scoring nine possessions in a row, allowing the Banana Slugs to take a 15-11 lead. The Loggers were unable to convert shots into points, and Santa Cruz extended its lead to 17. At halftime, the Loggers trailed, 47-30.
Santa Cruz extended their lead to 20 points, but the Loggers clawed their way back, reducing the gap to just six points. The Loggers made 15 of 19 free throws, but struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on just 5 of 22 three-pointers. They outscored the Banana Slugs, 40-35, in the second half, but were unable to overcome the offensive deficit.
Dezman Baker led the Loggers with a season-high 23 points, followed by
Hugo Rutherfurd with 14.
The Loggers kick off conference play next weekend against Whitman and Whitworth. Games are Friday night at 6pm and Saturday at 4pm respectively.
