FOREST GROVE, Ore. – There were eight Loggers who were hit by pitches between the two games, yet the Pacific University Boxers dominated twice on Sunday.
Puget Sound 9, Pacific 3
Puget Sound started the scoring in the top of the third after junior
Aidan Sullivan doubled to center field following a single to center field from
Nicholas Prater.
Cooper Allen rounded out with a single to left field adding the first RBI.
Jack McCullar came in a few plays later to sacrifice bunt to run in Sullivan, the Loggers now lead the Boxers 2-0.
The Boxers quickly turned it around equalizing in the bottom of the third when the Loggers made consecutive walks due to a pitching change from
Charlie Decker to
Cal Johnson. The Boxers grabbed one more run in the fourth inning and followed with three runs in the fifth and eighth inning.
Davis Franklin doubled in the top of the seventh to score in one more, but the Loggers would end the game 9-3.
The Loggers and Boxers had four pitching changes each, but ultimately Decker lost on the mound.
Puget Sound 4, Pacific 5
The Loggers started the scoring in the next game as well with Franklin on third, and
Makana Murashige reaching first on a fielder's choice,
Preston Crockett scored in Franklin on an error by first base. In the next play, Murashige scored on a wild pitch, taking a 2-0 lead.
The Boxers wouldn't score until the bottom of the fifth, the first batter was hit by the pitch, followed by a single and a sacrifice fly, 2-1.
The Loggers continued to score in the top of the sixth,
Sean Murphy got walked, and advanced to second when
Kellen Krebs was hit by a pitch,
Cadence Ueyama reached on a fielder's choice, then Kamihara finished with a single to first to score in two. The Boxers tried to equalize scoring two of their own in the bottom of the sixth, but were still trailing the Loggers 4-3.
The next two innings went scoreless until the Boxers tied it up when Jack Rhea scored in Miles Bergman, the Loggers put in Mason Saey to pitch, taking the game into extra innings.
It was in the bottom of the tenth inning that the Boxers pulled away, pinch hitter Jett Mai singled to center field to score in Matt Gibbs who was walked, taking the win 5-4.
Mason Saey finished with one earned run.
The Loggers will return home this next weekend to face Bethany Lutheran College in a double-header on Sunday, March 3, starting at 11 a.m. and a single game on Monday, March 4 at 2:30 p.m.
